The purpose of this position is to support the National Manager, Safety Evaluation and Assessment by identifying at an early stage any emerging Potential Safety Issues (PSIs) and potential Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) noncompliance issues through data searches and sophisticated analysis of Kia America (KUS) vehicle data from relevant data sources, using Kia’s Safety Data Analytics Infrastructure (SDAI) and other supporting applications. This position will also support safety and FMVSS noncompliance recall decision-making and requests related to NHTSA inquiries, investigations, and meeting preparation.

This position will lead a team of Field Data Analysis Engineers and ensure consistent and insightful review of data sources. The position will conduct or delegate data analysis activities related to urgent events received from automated alerts and ad-hoc alerts received from other Safety Office personnel, other departments, and Kia affiliates. The position will also review new NHTSA investigations and recalls for appropriate follow-up analysis by the Field Data Analysis Engineers and broader Safety Office team, as well as identify focus issues for escalation to upper management and external stakeholders. The position will also coordinate data analysis work with the Emerging Field Data (EFD) team and the Forensic Engineering & Investigations (FEI) team, as well as provide data analysis support to the KUS Legal Department and outside counsel for defense of claims and lawsuits. 

Major Responsibilities

1st Priority - 20%

Supervise and provide feedback regarding field data analysis work performed by the Field Data Analysis Engineers of PSIs and potential noncompliance issues to ensure consistent and efficient analyses. Ensure accurate and complete data is provided for Safety Evaluation List (SEL), responses to NHTSA inquiries, and field action recommendation reports.

2nd Priority - 20%

Lead reviews with field data analysis engineers regarding their emerging field issue preliminary analyses. Gain consensus with the field data analysis engineer on escalation of issue to the Data & Technical Evaluation Team (DTET) or other disposition, as appropriate. Provide NM, Safety Evaluation & Assessment with prompt notification of PSIs and potential noncompliance issues. 

3rd Priority - 20%

Coordinate with EFD team, FEI team, other NASO personnel, KUS departments, affiliates, and regulatory agencies to identify emerging PSIs. Take follow-up action by delegating or conducting data analysis efforts as appropriate.

4th Priority - 20%

Perform sophisticated field data analysis, create field action recommendation reports, and present to management using clear and concise language. Provide data analysis support for KUS Legal in-house and outside counsel.

5th Priority - 20%

Review new NHTSA investigations and competitor recalls to ensure coverage by SDAI alerting system. Collaborate with Safety Analytics Manager to propose and validate SDAI enhancements. Provide severity criteria change suggestions to NM, Safety Evaluation & Assessment.


  • BS degree in Engineering required.

Overall Experience

  • 5-10 years of technical experience in automotive positions such as Technical Analysis, Product Quality, or in another automotive engineering environment.
  • 2-5 years of experience managing teams. Management of technical teams a plus.
  • 5 years of extensive written and oral technical communications experience.

Directly Related Experience

  • Automotive, aerospace, or similar technical work experience required.
  • Experience applying statistical analysis concepts and software tools required.
  • Experience analyzing field complaint, claim, and safety/quality data required.
  • Experience supporting engineering investigations required.
  • Employee supervisory experience required.
  • Computer programming (including SAS, Tableau, Power BI) a plus.

Other Requirements:

  • Schedule(s) may vary due to needs of the business including but not limited to working outside of normal business hours, travel, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally (travel typically up to 10%).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Advanced knowledge of automotive systems and components.

Pay Range

$104,048 - $150,128

Pay will be based on several variables that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to, job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, etc.
