Indirect Tax Manager

Indirect tax manager will be responsible for (1) all indirect tax compliance and audits, including sales & use tax, gross receipts tax, property tax, Form 1099, and various state & local annual reports and business licenses/registrations, (2) indirect tax exposure analysis and mitigation, (3) systems improvement and implementation, and (4) coordination with other departments to properly address indirect tax implication.

Major Responsibilities

Priority 1st - 40%

Sales/use tax audits & compliances

  • Manage sales & use tax compliance process to meet all deadlines and process payments on time.
  • Handle sales & use tax audits, including preparation of responses to taxing authorities and audit result summary for management review. 
  • Maintain and reconcile sales & use tax liabilities on a monthly or quarterly basis.
  • Update current tax rules and tax legislation changes to comply with applicable tax rates and other tax reporting requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate tax controls and policies for sales & use tax.
  • Research/prepare lemon law buyback sales tax refund requests.

Priority 2nd - 30%

Other indirect tax compliances and audits

  • Manage property tax returns, annual reports, business licenses/registrations, and distributor/representative licenses.
  • Handle other state & local indirect tax audits.
  • Maintain dealers resale certificates file.
  • Monitor and analyze notices from various taxing authorities and coordinate the proper responses.
  • Coordinate with outside processor to timely file Forms 1096/1099.
  • Handle requests Form 1099 recipients and notices from taxing authorities.

Priority 3rd - 20%

Sales & use tax system improvement

  • Review all revenue streams at KUS and coordinate with outside tax advisor to develop/manage the taxability decision matrix for sales & use tax.
  • Manage and support the sales tax automation project.
  • Develop strategies and process improvement plans.

Priority 4th - 10%

Other responsibilities

  • Review all vendor invoices submitted through AP on a daily basis to ensure the proper sales & use tax application. 
  • Review vendor files for sales & use tax compliance of vendors billing on cost+ bases, such as marketing and advertising vendors or contractors, to ensure that such vendors are not overcharging taxes.
  • Coordinate with procurement and account payable departments to properly address sales & use tax implication.
  • Maintain tax levy notices and properly withhold and remit the withholding payments to taxing authorities.
  • Process Purchase Requests for PO's for outside tax consultants and tax software subscriptions.
  • Other projects or duties as assigned.




  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field of study or equivalent work experience required

Overall Experience

  • Understanding of general accounting and state/local tax laws
  • Automotive industry experience preferred

Directly Related Experience

  • Minimum 7+ years’ work experience in sales/use tax return preparation and remittance required.
  • Minimum 7+ years’ work experience in real/personal property tax return preparation and remittance required.


Experience with SAP
Intermediate level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word required to create workpapers, schedules, and reports from original source documents.
Strong analytical skills and ability to read tax statutes of various tax jurisdictions.
